some course work completed in junior college,
while in high school, provide dual credits for
both college and high school. For example, my
daughters enrolled in such things as collegelevel
pre-calculus and Spanish (as did I). This is
also a great way to give your child an idea of
what the college experience is like.
Take a peek inside as many doors as you can.
Begin visiting colleges that your child might
wish to attend. Take your child to Visitors’ Day
at several institutions of higher learning.
Whatever baccalaureate program your children
choose, consider junior college as an
option for the first two years of their college
experience. JC classes are affordable and the
quality of education is usually of the same
caliber as some universities. The instruction is
personal. In some cases, the junior college experience
is often superior to learning at larger
schools where undergraduate students are
sometimes stuck in enormous foundational
classes often being taught by a Teaching
Assistant reading from a professor’s notes.
However, if you have done your homework
and you are prepared for the cost, private universities
have a lot to offer.
Many private colleges have endowment funds
and offer substantial scholarships not only for
young people who have high GPAs and great
SAT scores, but they are also looking for any
positive impact that they might have had upon
their community. Community Service is high on
their list. Like junior colleges, many private
colleges offer smaller classes with instructors
that invest in the lives of the students. Many
private religious schools provide the comfort of
shared values.
These are three areas important to our children’s
challenge in preparing for life. We change
the world through the choices we make with
our children.
Long after people have forgotten about who
you were, what you did, what kind of car you
drove, or what jewelry you wore, the influence
you exerted upon your children’s development,
whether good or bad, will continue to ripple and
to reverberate through the river of time.
