110 degrees magazine - Index110 degrees magazine - magazine_08 - IndexLeadership Academies that will incorporate the
vision that has come to Tyler.
These will be paraschool organizations, like
scouting. We’re going to set up the first one in
2008 after reaching the $50,000 goal. Within five
years I intend to have one of these in every state.
Each will be a place where kids’ ideas can be heard
and put into action.
The leadership academies will encourage participants
to form an idea of some project to respond
to a need in the world, and then help them
develop and implement their plans in a learning
environment. They will learn invaluable lessons
and the academies will promote necessary skills,
such as learning how to do research.
For example, a little boy might have brain
cancer. His friend or schoolmate might say, “I
would like to help his family with food.” The
academy would then provide resources to help
him understand what could be done.
We will teach about networking and about
developing fliers to catch people’s attention,
conducting fundraisers, developing budgets,
communication skills, public speaking, team
building, and accountability.
At the end participants will have the opportunity
of choosing to become leaders in the
program themselves and teach others, working
within the program — or they can move on. We’ll
be developing leaders of all ages, using some of
these to maintain and reinforce the expansion
of the program.
Anybody can encourage children to make a
difference in this world. The model that Tyler set
up is reproducible for anyone who wants to make
a difference:
1. Talk to children. “What do you think you could
do to help others?”
If nothing else occurs to you, you can always
get them to join Tyler.
2. Spread the word. Check the Website. Put a link
to it at the bottom of your website or in your
email signature.
3. Contribute directly. Think of great ideas for raising
money. Put out a jar. The method is as
inspiring as the money is helpful.
This feels more like a movement than a project.
We’re not relying on Oprah for help; I want us
to do this on our own.
And we will.
