observation and experimentation in
supporting or refuting hypotheses associated
with the particular science.
In spite of its 6,000 years of history this
lack of rigorous evidence denies to feng
shui the plausibility that real science is
able to commend.
On the other hand, people often (or
usually, perhaps) define truth in nonscientific
ways. Kilye said that before
learning about feng shui she had problems
getting along with her daughter.
Kilye’s studies revealed that the daughter’s
room was oriented in a terrible direction.
She moved the room into a better
orientation and the daughter’s attitude
changed remarkably.
Also, Kilye discovered that the oldest
son in the case study had changed the
direction of his bed a few months before
inadvertently putting it into a completely
wrong orientation.
In response to her questioning, the son
admitted that his positive attitude
towards life had diminished remarkably
after he had made the change.
People are forced to maintain a deliberately
unsympathetic attitude in order to
not be intrigued by that kind of apparent
congruence between theory and fact.
Kilye acknowledged that a skeptic could
conclude such things to be mere coincidence.
“But I know what I think about the
matter,” she said with a smile.
The mystery of feng shui’s great appeal
stems from the fact that we humans have
minds that long for harmony and order,
and will readily impose patterns upon
whatever system we deal with no matter
how chaotic.
I can appreciate the great satisfaction
that must come from arranging a living
space in accordance with the principles of
feng shui and the a deep gratification
that comes from putting everything in its
proper place in an arrangement that is
pleasing to both the mind and spirit.
Those feelings of satisfaction and gratification
provide perfectly adequate
substitutions for truth for some people.
Perhaps for most of us. °
